At the time she was unknown to the public, but those who knew Hitler knew her, or at least knew about her. She was a photographer and filmed Hitler a lot - apparently she imagined that Hollywood would want the material so she made sure it was stored in a safe place when she went off to the bunker. Instead, once it was found it was used as evidence against various nazi officials in the trials, according to the documentary.
She was portrayed as very naive and completely unconcerned about politics, but she also warned her sister, who was in love with a Jewish man, that they could be sent to concentration camp - so she cannot have been oblivious to what was going on.
