The dreaded speculum is why I always hesitate to make my yearly Gyno appointment. I sort of know what you went through because I had an IUD (Intra-Uterine Device) inserted, and though I was given a heavy duty 800mg dose of Ibuprofen (via a pill) before hand, and some numbing cream to use, it still was very uncomfortable when I had the procedure done. The IUD is for birth control, though right now, I don't really need it being that I am single. Still, its nice because I don't get regular periods anymore.
