I'm married(separated now) and my husband is on SSI. We have to live apart and list ourselves as separated or they use my income against him. IF we live together like we should then he gets $213 a month. With us being separated he gets $733. We are thinking about divorce so we can live together again. We've checked and they can't hold your roommates income against you so if we divorce we'd move in together as roommates.
I have private insurance through my work but he still has medicaid. They have never told us I have to insure him.
ALSO if you get married BEFORE you get your backpay all the months that you are married they will cut your backpay. IF we hadn't been married hubby would have gotten $61,572 in backpay. Instead we got less than $ 5,000 because of my whopping $11/hour job. Because of OT there were months they said he didn't earn anything because I got too much. If you can definitely wait until they figure your backpay to get married.
I recently did the math and us being married 8 years has cost him over $100,000 in benefits and help he would have gotten if we'd never married. In my opinion marriage is not worth it if you get SSI. UNLESS you don't really need/care about the money.
If you have any questions feel free to ask. I wish you the best of luck
