One time I begged him to make up some phone boundaries. He said, "OK-- Ummmm, don't leave a message after 10 PM." And we both laughed knowing it was ridiculous.

I agree-- boundaries and consistency are comforting-- but I tend to overdo the boundaries to the point where it holds me back from expressing a lot of things. I guess I don't completely trust him and his boundaries to keep me safe so I have to make up a whole layer of my own.
