GET SELFISH!
I really think you should find out what pleases YOU, and then pursue it. It may be your scientific interests, and you may get in touch woth people sharing teh same interests. You may meet old pals... And then is YOUR income really inadequate to YOUR needs? Or you are helping others too much?
I don't know the full picture, but my advice goes in this direction.
