Im not a doctor but it sounds like he is bp2. Bp1 has full blown manic episodes. Think, not sleeping more than 4 hours for days at a time, losing track of reality, racing thoughts,chasing thrills of any kind, delusions, sense of grandeur. Bp 2 has hypomania, which is similar but doesn't get out of control to the point of delusions and losing touch with reality.
When hypomania tips into mania, things get really scary and you may feel like you are looking at a different person altogether. I know when I'm manic I feel completely invincible and I also have no idea what is actually going on. Bp2 also has more depression than mania.
