If you are 18 y.o. or older, you can declare yourself responsible for your own bills (in the hospital billing paperwork). If you don't work or work little, only your own income will likely be used to determine whether or not you may obtain additional financial aid through the hospital. This may benefit you. Please discus with patient financial aid and with your mom. Her insurance still comes into play for your main coverage.

(I am well over 18 y.o. and I legally protect my husband and our joint assets by declaring I am the sole party responsible for my own bills. I only list him as my husband and my emergency contact.)
