If only life were that fair. It's not and that sucks. I don't know a whole lot about this but I get the feeling that they care too much to let you go (not including people who barely know you and just think it's wrong). It's selfish to ask someone to stick around, humans are selfish. They were able to let go of that selfishness for this man you describe because his suffering was not only obvious, but in their face, making them see it as cruel to force him to keep going. What you suffer from isn't able to really be seen. They don't understand just how hard you're fighting and they might never see it.
