Maybe you need too try different therapist. Some are just not qualified or possess the experience needed to deal with people who have a severe depressive illness.

My therapist known as a well being practionar really don't seem to know much about understanding a persons problems. They send you homework and teach you how to control anxiety issues. All done over the phone. I have a questionnaire to fill out one of the questions is saying have I experienced thoughts of self harm or suicide. When I speak to them they say if you think you may harm yourself then call Samaritans or dial 999 for an ambulance.

Although I have not experienced thoughts myself I believe that if a person is or has thoughts about suicide they will be unable to just get on the phone. I'm looking at different options as I want a one to one where I can describe all my feelings and be open.

I hope you are able too find the right therapist too who will let you be fully open about it.
