Treat people you meet online like you would a celebrity or good character you admire in a book. You have to really meet someone to get to know them and most people met online are not practical to meet in person. If he's across the country in a psych ward, that's pretty "far" away from anywhere you're likely to be? You might as well love Denzel Washington :-)
