I play a lot of videogames. Lets say that in a videogame there is a character that specializes in fighting hand to hand combat or with a sword. I can't play that character, not because it's a difficult character, but because I can't relate to it. I don't like fighting, I don't have any fighting training and I've never been in a fight either. I'm not a violent person.
I can't watch Pokemon. You know why? Because I have low self-esteem, and Ash (the main character) is all about winning and beating the very best pokemon trainers. So I can't relate to Pokemon, hence I can't watch it.
Now I'm playing a Pokemon game, and the only Pokemons I want are the none-physical types. I can only have the Pokemon that do Psychic attacks, because I'm a thinking man, I think a lot and I see myself as of higher intellect and awareness than most other people. So it makes sense for me to like Pokemon that also do stuff with their mind instead of with their brawn.
I can't have any chubby or fat pokemons either, because I'm not fat. It actually came to a point where I decided to become fat and eat more because I wanted to be able to use fat pokemon, and become a fat pokemon trainer.
This thinking patten applies to every part of my life, wheter I'm choosing Pokemons in a game or I'm buying a new computer part for my computer, then that computer part has to be a certain color that I can relate to, not nessecerily the color I like and prefer, but the one I can relate to.
I know there's something wrong with me, because I see so many other people play videogames and they don't have these problems. They don't think about what color the Pokemon is, or if they can relate too it, it never crosses their mind. I want to be able to be like them.
How do I work pass this?

Hi, that is a very interesting obsession. I too, experience very strange obsessions from time to time. I know you describe your obsession about being to relate to things mostly with video games, but in general, one thing I can suggest would be to try to get outside of yourself. You describe yourself as having "higher intellect and awareness" than most people. While that may be true, there is also enough selfishness in that kind of thinking to cause feelings of superiority, which I feel makes it more difficult to relate to people in day to day life. There are millions and millions of people in the world, all going through some aspects of life that you can't relate to. There are also many people who can't relate to you. We all exist, and we connect by
trying to relate to one another. It is called having empathy. If you continue to choose only activities you can relate to, your world will gradually become smaller and smaller. The more you expand your world, the more you will be able to relate to over time. I would consider a wise person to be not only one who is "of higher intellect and awareness", but also one who is able to relate to a lot of different situations, because they have had many different experiences.
But back to Pokemon, I would say go for it. Choose a Pokemon you know you absolutely cannot relate to and make the attempt to relate. It is okay if you can't relate, I'd say at the end of the day what matters is that you try. That is a very good skill, not only for Pokemon, but for life and interpersonal relations!
