I have a friend who has schizophrenia, when his meds are off track and his schizophrenia symptoms are active he hears voices and has alters that tell him to do mean things. tells him people are out to get him...

I know someone else who created false alters (a type of non DID type alter.) in order to please their treatment provider...

another non dissociative type alter in my location is commonly called invisible friends...

my point there are many different kinds of alters....
forgot to add those that I know here in my own off the computer location those with BPD have non dissociative type alters (alters that are there because of medication problems, or are hallucinations and delusions.)

those that I know in my off the computer locations that have both BPD and DID, their treatment providers had to specify on the files which of their known alters were due to medication, hallucinations\delusions and which were dissociative type associated with their having DID.

like already stated my location has strict guidelines on how to tell the difference between psychotic like (hallucinations \ delusions thoughts and alters) vs dissociation\ DID alters.

to find out which a person has they have to contact their own treatment providers who can administer diagnostic tests to discover what mental disorders a person has and which kind of alters they may have.
