I've taken 2 mg at night for many years. I have 1 mg PRN that I almost never use. I have asthma and when I was working I was surrounded by triggers that made me need breathing treatments and inhalers that made me more manicky so back then I used 1 mg PRN twice a day and I did use at least 1 and usually both of those doses.
I have never felt a high or anything but relaxation from it. Honestly at this point I find gabapentin works better for anxiety in general for me. I'm hoping to start what will be a very long (because it will be extremely slow--2 years possibly) taper soon. But my pdoc says the way I take it has helped with dependency as my body is used to my levels dipping down during the day and then coming up at night--there is no stable level for me ever. I do have some signs of dependency in that if I miss a dose or two I get stomach issues but that's it.
Anyway, if you are worried about addiction you might ask about gabapentin. It works on the same receptors as klonopin and like I said works really well for me for anxiety. Last winter I was IP for a very difficult med change and I couldn't have done it without the gabapentin to keep me from totally losing it. Instead it kept me as calm as possible and I made it through a lot more easily than it would have been with just klonopin and hydroxyzine.
