I've been through something similar so I feel for you.

I believe meds including benzos and sleeping meds do destroy the body's ability to sleep. I've known people on other forums who ran out of meds who didn't sleep for days.

From what I've read in health books, a lot of meds deplete the body's store of magnesium that is needed for sleep. What you might try is soaking in epsom salts to absorb some magnesium sulfate and see if that helps you sleep. Be sure and buy a brand that is designed for soaking, and use a lot. You want to soak for at least 20 minutes. Take some calcium, vitamin D3 and K along with it as the 4 nutrients work together.

It took me at least 4 years to find out that low magnesium levels was one of the main reasons I couldn't sleep after going off meds. I also had high cortisol levels in the afternoon and evening [if you're tired during the day and energized at night, it's high cortisol levels] so I take a supplement called Seriphos to lower my cortisol. Between that and the magnesium, I now sleep through the night 5 nights a week.
