I was 11 and it was in the summer. I knew what it was because we'd had health classes just for girls in school. I told my Mom, and she introduced me to the pads that she used, which were awful. They were huge and had to be attached to a belt. She didn't believe in tampons because all the info about toxic shock syndrome was just coming out, so I remained scared of tampons for a long time.
