Well, you have to be pretty bad off to be admitted to the hospital. Are you currently suicidal, to the point where you're a danger to yourself or others? Are you in need of med adjustments that can't be safely done outside of the hospital? Those are a couple of the criteria for admission. Unfortunately, health insurance (or lack of it) is often an issue regardless of how seriously you're affected...hospitals want to be paid, and unless you're poor enough to qualify for charity care you may face an uphill battle.
I don't want to be a Debbie Downer, but I'm just pointing out the reality. When I went IP I had no insurance---I was seriously suicidal to the point of having a plan, and that was enough to get me admitted---and the social worker found a charity care program that allowed me to get services for free. I was in for a week, and they would've let me stay longer but I was ready to go home.
