In DBT class today I learned a distress tollerence technique. You dunk your face in a sink of ice water and hold your breathe for 30 seconds. It brings about a sense of calm. Cold water divers get this sense of calm when they dive. It has a name but I can't remember it....perhaps you can try this if things get worse....I may be doing it myself soon.
