A friend once described her own niece, a young adult living with her mother, as someone so "bipolar and useless" that my friend couldn't understand why "she didn't just kill herself." This taught me a lot about my friend, who had already distinguished herself by asking why we spent to have our dog's cancerous eyes removed to save his life instead of just having him put down.
