I have two coworkers from my first job that I have dinner with every year (usually in Nov or Dec). It is good to keep in touch, but they spend the time complaining about people I don't even know at their company and how terrible everything is there. It is the same every year. I left their company so I don't really want to listen to all the problems there. It brings back my bad memories of that job. I don't feel like I should put myself through it again. I am feeling guilty because I am going to tell them I am not meeting them this year.
That sounds sensible of you, self care is important.

I guess you could just say you're very busy this year rather than confront the real reason, that would spare them possible hurt.
Thanks for this!
