I'm with you on this as well. My first therapist chastised me for asking questions that I deemed pretty standard and friendly - where she was from, that sort of thing - with things like "this isn't about me" and it was just weird imo. I internalised this "law of therapy" and instead of asking my current psychologist questions I just found a bunch of stuff out online, which was far less healthy. But he will tell me where he goes on holiday, and since I emailed him to tell him a response that he had was helpful, he has even started disclosing feelings / responses to how I "am" as a client. It's very healthy and I am glad he is not shying away from it. I feel like we are both sort of experimenting with me, to a degree.
