My pdoc had told me this increased awareness in public places is "wise." He'd added that he sees it as paranoia only if I were to see the threat as aimed only toward me (if there are people with guns waiting for me to show up). Luckily, I don't think there are gunmen/others waiting specifically for me.

I like the way you put it, paranoia only if I were to see the threat as aimed only toward me. That gives it a sense of perspective.
