I think that cutting down on White, starchy carbs and sugar is the way to go. Getting your carbs from eating more vegetables is better. Eat proper unprocessed, unrefjned food. Quit the coke and don't drink beer too often. Exercise alone doesn't burn off enough calories to lose much weight. Check out the LCHF vids on youtube. Obviously you need need to talk to your doctor about your diet but a lot of them are still stuck in the past as regards what constitutes a healthy diet.
