According to my religious upbringing, we are all sinners and as long as you repent and are heartily sorry for the sin, all is forgiven. If the Justice system makes an exception for illness, I'm sure that that the kind, loving, just God we all know and love does as well. He created each of us as we are.
It is a human weakness to find difficulty in forgiving and forgetting, not a divine one. Once the sin is forgiven, it is forgotten, the slate wiped clean.
