I agree with not inviting him over. You may consider this okay, but he may have a different take on it as a second date.

Where we live, we have a couple of movie theaters that serve meals....It might be a nice thing to do...It would take the pressure off the fact that it's a New Years eve date.

I think you approached this date a lot more relaxed than in the past, so kudos for that.
