Allies? A support network? I don't have friends for the purpose of hanging out. Sometimes we do hang out, but that's never my goal when I make a friend.
As the above might suggest, I've got little experience planning group recreation... but I'm going to take a wild guess and suggest you might have better luck getting people to do something more fun if you plan it in advance. Don't just go to one of your houses with no plan and then try to spring something on them.

What's sad about that? Some of my nicest lunches with a friend have been pretty much like this. Not everybody likes chit-chat.
