I had a very suicidal year a few years back and was on all kinds of precautions and not coping well. My brain just went on a break and then when I started to get better I went into a very intense PTSD therapy that kept my mind focused on that alone for quite a while. During that time I found loom knitting was very helpful. I made baby hats and donated them to a charity. I knitted a lot for a long time until I was able to do other things. I found it so calming. And with the looms (cost about $10-15) it's very easy. You can even knit socks on looms although I never was brave enough (or trusted my cognition enough) to try that.
