It's as good as a day to celebrate, how and what to celebrate is anybody's choice I guess. It's cultural celebration so, one can challenge it or not participate in it, I'm not pointing fingers at anyone here. Trash talk is easier than a deep contemplation of any given subject.
Monday or Friday, if one cares about it, maybe it is something. It is that much difficult to see oneself on any other days, I think the new years and being resolute, the weight of the meanings and effects of the resolution depends on how much one looked back on their lives and remembers, somebody dies on this day every year and many human lives are born.
Rewriting culture isn't easy. We're born into one without choices and be taught what our freedom and culture is, it's rational to celebrate the first day, I'm given two calenders in my country and on any official documents or on any paper work in work situations, I'm required to provide the one that I don't always recall the year, I believe there's not much to discuss about new year's day, is it hurting anyone? There are other calender holidays that may need some changes, because of the cultural shift, historical facts and some people may get over sensitive, they usually get political in nature.
I don't see any good reasons to oppose the new year celebrations, in freedom, y'all have a choice. Calling something a BS, because it's the same every year? It is a traditional celebration, isn't it? It is supposed to be the same year after year. Proposing a stardate like system, switching to Julian Day Number (JDN) that astronomers use may eliminate the frustration. This would be ideal, because our birthday goes out of the window too. You'd be recognizing every day differently than majority of people, arbitrary celebration for someone you care about can happen spontaneously, just think about it.

Better to have no expectations because no expectations means no disappointments.

I'd take the disappointments out of that equation. Just regulating the expectation part is enough, it's simpler and the 'no', the zero is hard to achieve, better learn about controlling anything than hoping the negation is the light. The meaning is up for interpretations, I don't even know how expectation works, belief, truth and justification, somewhere in between lies the usable knowledge of these sort of things.
