No problem. Towards the top of most, if not all of the board's pages, you'll see a line of text indicating the tree structure of the pages you're browsing through. For example, within this thread, I see:

Forums at Psych Central
> General
> Community Feedback & Technical Support
Then below that, I see the thread title, indicating which thread I'm currently in. The last entry (to the right) within the line of text shown above, is what indicates which forum you're in.
This, however, changes when, for example, you're using the more advanced posting page; for all those smilies, the formatting options, thread icons, etc. By advanced posting, I just mean
not the "quick reply" feature which allows you to post on the same page as the thread. I hope I made that understandable.
So, to break it down:
"Forums at Psych Central" means the board itself, wherein all the forums, threads, and posts reside. Within that, there's "General", which indicates the category of forums. Sort of like a folder within a folder on your computer. Within that category of forums, you'll find the "Community Feedback & Technical Support" forum, which is the forum we're in when we view this thread.
Hope I didn't make that a nightmare to understand! Really tired and have had a headache all day, so I may not be on top form. xD
By the way,
"It is more the different categories of threads that confuse me tbh, there are so many." - I can appreciate the confusion. There are a lot, I agree. It does keep things separate though; things would be quite a mess if everything were lumped into just a few forums, especially with so many delicate topics.
