My T always does the happy new year thing and I hate it. If we email around that time to make an appointment or whatever, she always says it and then the first time I see her in the New Year as soon as she opens the door she says "happy new year" which is what happened last session. I hate it and never wish anyone happy new year so I don't say it back. Weirdly though during last session, T admitted that she doesn't particularly like new year, doesn't want to be merry or stay up till midnight! So I was thinking, why would you say happy new year then??
