Some doctors will only treat certain aspects of our care. I was seeing my GP after being medically hospitalized for asthma from forest fire smoke. My mom was dying of cancer at the time, I ended up experiencing a trauma dealing with the home care person I caught abusing my mom & anorexia set in. His comment was....I will treat you medically for it (I ended up needing IV nutrition & he did all kinds of tests when I was hospitalized for not eating....but he said that my pdoc & psychologist needed to deal with the psychological aspects of the anorexia though he did interface with my pdoc & called in the staff pdoc & psychologist at the hospital for my support since my pdoc & psychologist didn't have privileges at that hospital.
Your doctor may have the same boundaries for his treatment. Cutting issues come under the care of a psychologist unless the cuts become infected then it comes under medical care but only the treatment of the cuts, not the treatment for WHY the cuts.
