Check out John Teasdale's TED talk- this is not Buddhist meditation. This is called Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT.) It has even been through clinical trials.
It is also taught at Kaiser Medical to help people with depression and anxiety. It has helped me to stop ruminating in depression.
I agree that if someone is in crisis- this would not be appropriate.
