Well I can tell you don't leave it under the sheets or under the pillows. I've almost tossed out tips that way. Guests can leave them on the top of the bed if it's in an obvious place, or on a desk or counter where it's visible.

I would leave smaller tips throughout the stay because in both hotels I've worked for we normally don't get the same room twice. A good portion of my tips have come from rooms I never cleaned.
