I take a whole lot of Abilify (30mgs). I'm not able to tolerate most antipsychotics/neuroleptics this well. On the upside, I take it, I don't have tremor, the "thorazine shuffle," etc. like I did with some other "atypicals," --but--, on the downside, Abilify doesn't cover all the bases, so I'm on a 4 drug cocktail.
One of my former shrinks said that lower dose of Abilify can cause "activation," energy, sometimes nervousness, etc., and that higher doses (like mine) are better for mania, agitation, really bad mood instability. Of course, its a tranquilizer, so at a certain point a high enough dose will just shut your mind down, completely. I think it would take tons Abilify to do that, though, because it works differently than the other drugs.
Anyway, you have other options. Other "atypicals," even carefully selected, carefully dosed "conventional" (older) antipsychotics. Some people really don't need an antipsychotic/tranquilizer, anyway, and would probably be better off without one. That's what I don't get. You see these sad, angry homeless people who clearly need some kind of antipsychotic, but nobody cares, and then all these people with less severe problems are being loaded up on antipsychotics/tranquilizers they don't want, need, and that cause problems and cost a lot of $$$. --end of rant--
I hope things work out well for you.
