I simply don't see the father as being a bad guy and not doing this sort of thing generally. Perhaps not the way some would do it, perhaps not as touchy feely as some might like, but I see no evidence that the father does not care for or love his son - even if he shows it differently than others might like.
Granted - I found my mother smothering and overprotective and overly emotional in many ways and I found it not pleasant.
