Usually a disability attorney will look at your case and if they think you have a good chance, they will take on your case for a percentage of the back pay you receive. You typically receive pay from time you file your case. Some cases take longer than others I had to file in September myself... although I am doing the work myself. You can file yourself on ssa.gov. It's whatever your most comfortable with. Hope this helps.
