I think talking this through with a counselor or therapist would be a good idea. Sometimes just having an objective person to talk things through with can help to sort things out.

I often have difficulty sleeping at night. When I do I walk slowly around-&-around our dark & quiet home for an hour or two. (Sort-of a walking meditation, if you will.) It has occurred to me, in the past, to go for a walk outside. But I don't do it. Chances are it would be safe enough. But the thought just feels uncomfortable.
