You go on a vision quest or in a deep trance. You ask the spirits to show you your spirit animal. It will first appear as a symbolic of some part of your psyche. Then the symbol will take on the form of an animal that belongs to you or has something to say to you.
Maybe then it appears even as a real world pet despite the conditions. This happened to me with a cat.
