I'm looking into exposure therapy for my dental phobia. Has anyone here used it before? Is anyone able to explain it to me?

Also, is it possible to have exposure therapy in online therapy?

Otherwise are there other types of therapy to help me overcome the phobia?

I really feel trapped right now. I need to find a way to start overcoming this not just go on an appointment by appointment basis because that isn't working.

Thanks.

Hello there. I'm doing PE therapy now, by tele sessions, through the Veterans Administration. From what I've read PE therapy works well with phobias and PTSD. It's hard, with a lot of homework, but by far the closest thing to what I think I need right now. I have also heard EMDR would work and I did try that with not a lot of success. Each person is different and what might work well for me may not be what works well for you. I would definitely give it a try. Google the exposure therapy and you will find some links that actually show you how a session goes. You have some type of recorder(audio) to tape the session . I have to listen to that entire tape once till the next appointment. Once you determine your anchor points and SUDS scores for things that cause you the most emotional pain, then you will record a session where you close your eyes and walk through the traumatic memory. I was very surprised at my reaction and getting so emotional during that taping, you go over it three times. After that, which I suggest making a separate tape for that walk through the emotional trauma, then you listen to that every day till your next appointment. I can see where this is getting confusing, so I will stop there.
It was hard but it is getting easier to walk through that hard part, having a lower emotional number each time. So do some research on it and see if it sounds like something you can do.
When I first started I got a lot of mixed emotions about it from other members, but the final decision was mine to make and I felt like it was worth trying. You can always stop if it's not for you.
If you start it keep in touch and we can discuss it. Good luck with it. All therapy is work in my opinion, you just have to keep your eye on the prize at the end, ya know?
