I live in California so medical use has been legal for a while now. I don't eat it because I prefer a quicker response time. Instead, I choose to vaporize it. I don't think it's for everyone (my old roommate tried it and was sent into a rather severe state of depression) but it helps me a lot with my anxiety and depression. If I have too much, I feel euphoric for a bit and then a sense of depression but it's never too severe. So my advice to anyone curious about medical cannabis is to start small and build up as necessary. I have a friend who is an ex-heroin addict so he won't smoke, vaporize, or eat marijuana but he takes CBD oil for his social anxiety. CBD oil has really low amounts of THC (the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana) so he doesn't experience a "high" really. I think a lot of people suffering from depression and anxiety (that feel marijuana is a bit too severe) would really benefit from cbd oil.
