Having an inner voice of our conscious running commentary on our lives is one thing but having conversations is indicative of a problem; one that could very well be serious.

A great start would be to talk about this with your family physician. They may find that this needs to go no further but they would also be a good gauge for if more specialized help is required. They would then make a referral to a psychiatrist.

Another option is if you have an Employee Assistance Plan (EAP) for your work. This is not to be confused with the insurance plan. It is a tool for obtaining resources like locating therapists, providing a listening ear, etc. Mine provided me several free consultations in addition to sending me a package of books, workbooks, and other resources.
