Hmmm... interesting question! Here goes my answer.
The name I was given at birth is now dead to me. I stopped going by it some 50 yrs ago. Got tired of everyone going "HUH??" when I told them what my name was. I grew to hate that name and even more so in my later years.
My girl friend, at the time, helped me think up a new one. She claims that the boyfriend of the month's last name could be translated into "Tomi". I have no clue nor do I care. I liked the name. I went through different spellings of it throughout the years: Tommi, Tomie, whatever came to mind that year. LOL
About 20 yrs ago, when I went through intensive regression therapy, I saw three facets of me at different ages; 3, 8 and 14. The 3 and 8 yrs old still had remnants of the old name. The 14 yr old, who was the protector, held the name of Renee. It means "reborn." I felt that I had been reborn during the regression therapy and I added Renee as a middle name. I hadn't had one before. I've done the name change legally. I can't imagine having any other name... except SeptMorn. Sometimes, I think of myself as that. My first birth was on a Sept. morning.
