I don't know anything about Dream interpretation but your analysis sounds relevant and as likely as anything I could think of. I'm so sorry for all you went through with your mom, and the disturbing dreams you are having.

I used to have reoccurring dreams when I was younger about protecting babies from a perpetrator. I would grab them and hide in closets, behind cars and other hiding spots with them, trying to keep them protected and calm. I never saw the face of the perpetrator, but still remember vividly the terror and fear when it was close to me and the person I was trying to protect. They were very disturbing.
