It was a confusing time, when lots of different psychologists vied to be in the forefront of child psychology.
I s'pose they thought it would be good for us, somehow...but all it really did was make us (esp. my brother and I) feel less-loved, and strengthened the notion that affection was purely an infantile need. I grew up getting very few hugs, kisses, validation, or compliments, in general.
It didn't amount to out and out abuse; but it certainly wasn't ideal, either.
