I didn't have a hearing. SS approved me for disability only six months after I applied. I used an attorney, and I don't suppose being hospitalized just before that hurt my case any. They did have me undergo a physical exam because I also claimed disability for medical issues in addition to my bipolar, and I think my age helped too (I'm almost 60 and employment prospects aren't very good at this stage of life).
