I found journaling to be very helpful as I started to attain some co-consciousness. I would just let whoever wanted to say something to write. It helped me not dissociate so much, it helped me see that I really do have DID, it helped me understand where some parts were coming from.
I would always take my journal in to t appts (I was going 5 days a week at my worst), that helped me stay safe. Can you show someone safe the scary part? I also do not go back and read stuff. I like the idea of circling something that seems important.
