My personal experience with diapers is limited to using them as a bandage on an injured horse, BUT I saw something cute at a baby shower. Someone rolled diapers, stood them on end and made a "cake" out of them.
Something else to consider is buying clothes the baby can use in a few months. A young woman who interned with me this year is a single mom. She told me that she got all sorts of newborn size clothes for her son at her shower but he quickly outgrew them. It was a financial burden for her to have to buy bigger clothes.
