Something else to consider is buying clothes the baby can use in a few months. A young woman who interned with me this year is a single mom. She told me that she got all sorts of newborn size clothes for her son at her shower but he quickly outgrew them. It was a financial burden for her to have to buy bigger clothes.

Yes, absolutely agree with this. Also, spit rags, pacifiers (newborn and older, I didn't realize there were ages on them), dreft (or similar baby clothing detergent). Sometimes bottles aren't a good idea until after birth, cuz you don't know what kind the baby prefers.
One thing I like to do for showers is get a basket or trash can, that can have another use than just the gift, and fill it with stuff like baby shampoo, powder, diaper cream, lotion, and the like. It's stuff that they will probably get a bit of at the shower, but you would be surprised at how fast it gets used. It's a little cost that alleviated in the beginning, but also not that expensive for you and you can kind of get artistic with it, ribbons, and such...
Gratz on being an aunt!
