Another thing to ponder which I think is related is: do you talk to people you sit next to on a bus? I do this frequently.

Given on where you live, I can see why you would do that. And I don't talk to people. People just get on the bus and go to where they want or need to be. Unless someone knows someone else, no one talks on the bus or subway.
