Screw that. No parent that would abuse or neglect their children deserve respect; all any abuser deserves is suffering and death.

Oh as far as cultural norms goes; I consider people who adhere to strict cultural norms (such as the Amish) as being too weak and cowardly to think for themselves, therefore, they would rather take the easy way out by allowing other people to think and form opinions for them.
