My current doctor says that for mixed states Lithium is the best of those three, but he also said that current research has shown Lithium plus Valproate is even more effective. I started Valproate (with the Lithium I have been on for years) to try to calm me down but stopped the Valproate a week later because of the weight gain issues. In the end an AP Haldol, brought me back to stable.
